Makeup Tips for WAHMs

What was that I heard?  A groan?  Does even the thought of putting makeup in the morning make you laugh like a lunatic?  I know, I know, your schedule is crazy, you give all to your business and your family.  You are wondering what the heck I even know as I am only a mama-to-be and I will see soon enough how hard it is.  Did I get that right?  Trust me, there are many days I don’t wear makeup now, I can’t imagine when the baby comes even coming close to looking at eyeliner!

But as a makeup artist and makeup junkie, I wanted to give all the WAHMs some quick tips on what is hot right now and super easy to apply, so if you go to a networking event, for an interview with a potential client or get your picture taken, you can feel “in the know”.

  1. Have a “kit” in your purse of a few things that can make you look presentable when you are running errands.  We always seem to run into someone when we have no makeup on, dirty sweats and a dumb hat.  Keep in your bag: mascara (there are tons of fantastic ones at the drugstore now, I am currently loving CoverGirl EyeLights), a compact foundation (powder if you are oily, cream if you are dry), and a pink lipgloss or tinted lipbalm (pink will make your teeth look whiter).   That’s it, nothing fancy, but it will make you feel slightly pulled together and you can apply in the parking lot.  Slap, slap and you’ll be presentable in under a minute.
  2. Hot colors right now – pink for the lips, gray for the eyes, and a pop of pink blush on the cheeks.  Of course neutrals never go out of style, and you will always look your best in what you feel great wearing.  But do try a soft gray eyeshadow – so pretty for Spring.
  3. A tinted moisturizer with SPF 20 or more can be your best friend.  These come in formulations for oily and dry skin and they will give your skin moisture, even out your skin tone and protect you from sun damage.  Tinted moisturizer is a multi-tasker (like you!) and no woman should be without it.
  4. Two words – Spray Shampoo.  I know they used to have harsh stuff to spray on in the seventies and that totally wrecked your hair, but today’s products rock.  They make your greasy roots disappear and somehow your hair looks better than it ever has – not sure how or why, but I am pretty sure it has magical properties, perhaps they add crushed unicorn horn.  But seriously, if someone calls and wants to meet you and you haven’t showered in 4 days, spray your roots, be amazed at how awesome your hair looks, go get that client and thank me later.  :)
  5. If you are getting your picture taken, avoid shimmery shadows, they can bounce the flash and it will appear very shiny in the photos.  Stick to neutral colors, but add a bit more blush than you normally wear and a creamy lipstick.  If you have more than one chin (like me!), get the photographer to take the photo from a little higher up with you tilting your head up slightly.  What extra chin???

And the most important tip – support other WAHMs who have beauty businesses.  There are lots of women selling Mary Kay, Avon and other direct sales companies. Many WAHMs have created their own mineral makeup company, check etsy.com or google “mineral makeup”.  There are also WAHMs making lotions, creams, bath products, soaps, baby products, etc.  Support your fellow WAHMs and get great products, it is win-win.

Those are some quick, hopefully WAHM-approved makeup tips that won’t be overwhelming, because I know you have much more to do than sit around curling your eyelashes (yes, some people do this, not me).  But when you feel like you look good, you’ll feel confident, so slap on some mascara and go get ‘em you fabulous WAHM!!

Do you have any makeup tips or tricks or is makeup a distant memory?

  1. Kelly this is great and I think I’m going to do an article about this. I was wondering should I write about this but I’m going to. I never wore make up due to sensitive skin. Maybe a little aquaphor on my lips and that’s it. But I have realized how important it is to put on make up. You are not trying to impress anyone, but taking the time to put your best foot forward does something for your entire mood. When I put on my face, and not much just some foundation, aquaphor, and eyeshadow. I feel like I’m the only one in the world. All Eyes On Me Baby! So ladies, get into your make up. It’s a wonderful feeling when you are well put together.
