Overcoming Disillusionment

I just read a very good book and it only took me about an hour.  It’s called ‘Winning Habits’ and I found my copy at the local Goodwill for a buck. (That’s a dollar I’m glad I spent!)

I won’t spoil anything specific for you but I do want to share the ‘nugget’ that I pulled out to treasure for myself today and that is that pretty much everyone gets disillusioned at some point about something.

When you set out to develop a new habit or to achieve a new goal you are full of excitement, you only see the end game and it is very motivating.

Then you are walking out your daily life and find that the ‘process’ isn’t rosy and sweet. No, the process is usually a lot of hard work!

I stopped to think about times when I have felt disillusioned in relationship to my personal and business goals.

About two weeks into a diet – I’m pretty disillusioned with my low-cal menu and I tend to start cheating :(

Three months into developing a new website, I would get pretty disillusioned with the search engines. (I do all this work, create all this content and they just ignore me!)

Six months into a goal of developing more residual income versus trading hours for dollars – I’m feeling pretty disillusioned with my current income and thinking about back pedaling into my old ways.

The book really sparked an important realization for me. Every new goal that you set your eyes upon will serve up a season of disillusionment to you in one way or another.

There’s always a moment when you find yourself questioning where it’s all worth it. And what we have to realize is that the answer is always yes!

I’ve hung in with my new eating goals (for the most part) for seven weeks now and I’ve lost a good amount of weight. If I keep on keeping on I’ll keep on losing weight!

If I hang in there with my new content site, eventually my work will pay off and the search engines will start to give me some love in the form of visitors.

If I refuse to go backwards with my business and keep my focus on building residual income – in the long run I’ll enjoy a higher income with less effort.

You know, there’s a often quoted saying that ‘Successful people make a habit of doing what unsuccessful people  don’t do.’

Success really is simple isn’t it?  It’s easy to get tired, overwhelmed or just suffer for lack of evidence that what you’re doing is working.  Everyone has what it takes to give something a go – but only those with perserverance will hang in there for the payoff.

The great news for us is that perserverance can be developed.  Nobody is ‘just lazy’ by nature.  All behaviors can be modified if you want it bad enough.

So let’s step up and over this useless disillusionment and get our eyeballs back on the work at hand!  My guest on WAHM Talk Radio this week has had her share of disillusionment with business.  Listen in today and be encouraged to keep on keeping on :)

Thanks for that little “nugget”. You hit the nail on the head with that post. I’m in the process of starting my online business and I’m definitely feeling a little overwhelmed. I guess I need to keep plugging along.

Kelly I absolutely love, love, love the quote ‘Successful people make a habit of doing what unsuccessful people don’t do.’

I’m posting it in my workspace to remind me to keep working outside of my comfort zone and trying the new things i need to do to achieve what i want!

    Thanks for the boost!

This is really a great post Kelly. I can completely relate to being disillusioned when things don’t go as planned, or I am starting a completely new project. I’ll be listening in today!

  4. Aloha,

There’s a couple of things right now that are helping me staying on course:
    1. My team and their support
    2. The movie “The Secret” & it’s teachings mainly for this subject is keep envisioning the end product. Be thankful, thankful, thankful at all times. Right now my toilet bowl is really giving me problems and there are 4 of us if you know what I mean. When I’m plunging I always recite everything I’m thankful for! It helps really helps me!
    3. A book by Barbara Stanny, “Secrets of Six-Figure Women.” Even though I think most of the women she interviewed don’t have a home based business the steps they take to be successful are the same steps that a WAHM should take as well.
    Thanks for letting me share!
    Have A Great Day!…and…
    Stay Motivated Forever!
