Solo Smarts #41: It’s Going To Take Some Effort

Too many people think of building a business on the internet as being ‘easy’. – To be honest, compared to what people in the offline world go through, we do have it easier.

The big truth is this:  Building a business takes effort!  If you don’t give your business real effort, you’re not going to get very far.

We all dream of that wonderful ‘set it and forget it’ business model and yes, I have and continue to experience a lot of income from projects I completed years ago.  Still, if I had ‘forgot it’, I’d be in the poor house by now.   Business do not grow on their own.

Notice that I do not say ‘If you don’t give you business TIME….’.   No, time in and of itself doesn’t do much – it’s the effort we expend in the amount of time we work.

So, how much effort are you giving your business?  How carefully do you monitor your own productivity?  Are you busy working, or just busy?

I recommend The 10X Rule to plunge deep into this topic.  The author, Grant Cardone suggests that most of us have three possible speeds.

  • No-action
  • Retreat
  • Normal Action

That lines up nicely with this graphic “Everything you do…: I published earlier this year.

  1. Thanks for showing us Barbara’s website and most importantly, the wonderful things she’s doing to make her online business successful. The fact that she’s also single and on her own as a soloprenuer shows that it really is something that can be done.

You’re right though, it’s not really “easy” but it’s not impossible. I don’t scream and punch my keyboard (that would be my husband) but I do cry and get really frustrated when I can’t learn something as fast as I want to. Which sometimes leads me to avoid my office for a few hours.

But, I tell people all the time that it’s “easy” and I probably shouldn’t say that to people! It takes a lot of self-motivation and being hungry for the success. In addition to roadblocks like you mentioned, it’s easy to lose the hunger once you’re meeting your financial needs… motivating yourself to work over “needs” to also work for extras and wants which requires even more effort, expanding and learning new stuff or if possible outsourcing what you don’t know.

    Great show!

  2. Great point to mention Stephanie. Losing your hunger when your basic needs have been met. I suppose that some are only in it for that, so they’re not looking to develop anything else. That’s ok – but I have Carrie Wilkerson’s words ringing in my ear right now. She often says we have a responsibility to be everything we can be so that we can open doors and provide well for family and answer the greater call on our lives.

Just thinking about that gets me hungry!

You are true to your words there Kelly!
Building a business is not just writing or reading an ABC. It takes a lot of things… planning, strategy and a lot more. Perseverance is also needed to succeed in the business that you wanted to start.
